Hi all,

after trying out different virtualization solutions (spending many hours on them ...) I came across proxmox ve. My first steps with this software made me decide to give it a go for my server consolidation.

But I do have some problems. I need to say that I am looking for an alternative to the ms hyper-v so I am not very familiar with linux - so bare with me.

My main problem (thats why vmware and citrix did not worked for me) is actually my raid controller Highpoint 3510. There are modules available for Ubuntu 8.04 and Debian 4.0r0.

Here are my questions:
1) Which module should I use?

(I managed to modprobe both modules after installation but it does not show up as a device ...)

2) How can I load the right module during installation so the system can actually make use of the raid?

3) How can I add more drives to the data partition. (This is still not very clear to me after reading the documentation...)

-----
The systems I would like to consolidate:

1x Windows Server 2008 standard x64 (The Hyper-V host)
(Specs: q6600, 8 GB RAM, Highpoint 3510 raid 10 1xTB, 1x 160GB Boot, 1x500GB VM Storage)
1x Windows Home Server (A modified SBS 2003 x32; Main Storage/Backup System... currently on its own hardware. E6600,2 GB RAM, 3x500GB + 1 TB = 2,5 TB HDD)
1x Windows SBS 2003 R2 (Hyper-V)
1x OpenSuse 11.1 (Hyper-V)
1x Ubuntu 8.04 (Hyper-V)

Currently I am using the Raid for my working environment and storing apps and iso files.

My understanding is that I would not be able to attach the raid partition exclusively to a VM since proxmox ve is LVM based correct??
Is it possible to attach different disks/partions to single vm?? Does it even make sense to have a raid 10 going on proxmox ve with lvm?

But mybe my thinking is not right. To much windows... ;-)

Any suggestions, hint, how-to... would greatly appreciated...:p

Kind regards
BitRausch

That controller is not supported by kernel 2.6.24 (I will compile a new kernel for you).

I compiled a new kernel which includes the newest drivers. Just download and install it with:

Code:
wget ftp://pve.proxmox.com/debian/dists/etch/pvetest/binary-amd64/pve-kernel-2.6.24-4-pve_2.6.24-5_amd64.deb
dpkg -i pve-kernel-2.6.24-4-pve_2.6.24-5_amd64.deb

Then reboot to and test if it now detects the controller?

We will release a new CD next month.

We are working on a more flexible storage model (see roadmap).

yes

Wow !! Excellent Dietmar!
Thank you very much for your fast reply!!!
And thank you for your effort on compiling a kernel. I realy appreciat that!!!

I will install the kernel this afternoon and see how it goes and let you know.

Kind regards,
