Hey there,

is it possible to install proxmox with the cd image on two different rad arrays?
I would like to seperate the configuration of proxmox from the ct's and vm's.

I'd like to configure as follows:

Raid 1 (2 x SSD) raid lvl 1
there should be data, files etc. all of the proxmox host

Raid 2 (2 x 1TB HDD) raid lvl1
there should be the data, files etc. of my ct's and vm's

in future i will store the ct's, vm's on a NAS, but at the present, i have only one server without the possibility to mount a NAS etc.
I found in the documentation, that it is possible to change the filesystem to ext3 etc. maybe there's a way to give another command to seperate the data of proxmox.

Best regards

tomic

Install with only the first array connected. After install power down and connect second array. Configure it for storage

And how would you configure the second array?
Would you configure it as a storage of proxmox? i would prefer a fix configration of the host in which i change the paths to the files.

I do it this way a long time.
My KVM's and openvz containers are on a different raid array than the OS.
Just mount /var/lib/vz on a different array.
Im my case I run it on LVM with a XFS file system, Raid 5. wile the OS is on Raid 1 with the default filesystem.

I figured out that running the VM on XFS increased the performance, compared to ext3.

Cheers

what do you mean? the storage and separate array is just a mount point. configure it any way you like (LVM, ext3, ext4, xfs, whatever), then mount it as storage and assign it in the gui of your proxmox server.

it doesnt matter where your files are located, as long as there is some mount point in the OS, you can move your VMs around as you please. Installing the OS with the storage attached already doesnt benefit you in any way.

thanks a lot.

i would like to use the second raid array with LVM on ext4 or xfs. Are there any tutorials how to make it?

Not really sure you understand how any of this works.

My first post in this thread explains it.

Install with only the OS RAID connected
power down
connect the storage RAID
boot ProxMox
configure the storage RAID (there are thousands of tutorials online for configuring RAID setup in Debian)
configure ProxMox to use that mount point.
