Hello,

i want to install Proxmox on a Dell OptiPlex 3000 Thin Client. I downloaded the proxmox-ve_8.2-2.iso and used balenaEtcher to create a bootable USB stick. balenaEtcher said it was successfull.

When i select the USB stick in the bios boot menu of the Dell, it gives me the error "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system" after about a minute.

I tried following things:
  • Updated the BIOS to the latest version
  • Used Rufus instead of balenaEtcher
  • Tried three different usb sticks (two usb 3.0, one usb 2.0)
  • Tried every USB port of the Dell (it has three usb 3.0 ports and three usb 2.0 ports)
  • Used an USB 2.0 hub
  • Tested an Ubuntu installation on the same USB stick, which boots without any error
  • Tested an Windows 10 installation on the same USB stick, which boots without any error
Boot mode is UEFI, legacy ist not possible on the Dell.

Has anyone encountered this issue or have any suggestions for a solution?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn’t work either.

After hours of trying different things, I accidentally found the solution. In the BIOS, under "Storage" - "Storage Interface," I had to select "M.2 PCIe SSD" instead of "Onboard eMMC," which was selected by default.

After that, I was able to boot the Proxmox installation from a USB 3.0 stick which i made with balenaEtcher.

Maybe someone else is also facing the same issue with the Dell OptiPlex 3000, that was my solution.
