Is it possible to set up a cache to an ssd from proxmox?
How do the default cache settings work and where is the cache stored?

If you mean to use tit as a cache for storage it highly depends what storage type you are using.

Out of the box you can add a cache SSD to a ZFS Pool, also called an L2ARC [0]. Be aware though that if your system is already low on memory adding one will actually decrease performance because some data of it needs to be stored in RAM as well, taking away precious resources from the first level cache of ZFS in RAM, also called ARC.

Adding a cache SSD to other storage types is AFAIK not officially supported.
