Proxmox Backup Server Hardware, is that usable?

Hello everyone,

Two Options:
1)
Intel Xeon E5-1650V3
256 GB RAM
15x 10 TB HDDs (probably configured as 3-Way Mirror, so 50 TB usable?). Has to run PBS and act as Backup Storage Pool

or 2)
Intel Xeon W-2145
128 GB
2x 960 GB SSD (PBS Setup and SLOG, L2Arc for Backup pool?)
10x16 TB HDD (probably as 2 Way mirror?, better options?)

It's not possible to change the Hardware. Is any of that usable to backup ~20 VMs via PBS (each somewhere between 50 and 500GB) + do around 10 incremental rsync backup jobs every 4 hours (~5 TB total storage currently).

Hi!
I would select the second option, mainly because of the ssd's (although the cpu is also better).
A striped mirror (RAID10) (hdds) + two special devices (ssds) should work fine.

Estimating storage is kind of difficult especially when deduplication is a factor.

Since this is a backup server, I would go with the first option with Intel E5-1650 CPU. Put the other one for heavier load such as VM node. Better use of hardware in my opinion. That also has 256GB RAM. So use of ZFS storage in Raid-Z3 would give you much more usable space while tolerating 3 simultaneous drives failure. Backing up 20 large sized VM should not have any issue.

Even with the rsync every 4 hours, there should not be any issue.
