We are happy to announce version 1.1 of Proxmox Backup Server! It's built on Debian Buster 10.9, but using a current, long-term supported Linux kernel (5.4.106), and including ZFS 2.0.

NEW FEATURES as Technology Preview: Native tape support fully integrated into Proxmox Backup Server
  • Proxmox Backup Server supports LTO (LTO 4 and newer)
  • Tape backup jobs: back up datastores to a media pool
  • Tape restore jobs: restore content of a media set to one or more datastores
  • Flexible retention policies
  • New user space tape driver written in Rust
  • Support for various tape autoloaders: mtx tool rewritten in Rust (now called pmtx)
  • Configuration of components, jobs, and schedules via GUI
  • Proxmox LTO Barcode Label Generator, a small web-app, to generate and print bar-code labels
Two-factor authentication (TFA) for the GUI
  • Time-base One-Time Password (TOTP), WebAuthn, and recovery keys for single use
Countless bugfixes and smaller improvements are included as well, see the full release notes for details.

A very big THANK YOU to our community! Following the massive increase in deployments after the first stable release (1.0), a couple of bugs which were reported by the community have now been fixed. We are really grateful for all the support and feedback, thanks to all of you who were testing, bug reporting and patch submitting - thank you so much!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Can I upgrade my current installation to 1.1?
A: Yes, just upgrade to latest packages with apt or via GUI. Make sure you got a subscription to get upcoming stable updates (or configure pbs-no-subscription if you do not want to subscribe). After you installed the new version, just reload your browser page.

Q: How does this integrate into Proxmox Virtual Environment?
A: Just add a Proxmox Backup Server datastore as a new storage target in your Proxmox VE. Make sure that you run latest Proxmox VE 6.3.

Q: How do I install the proxmox-backup-client on my Debian or Ubuntu server?
A: We provide a "Proxmox Backup Client-only Repository", see https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#client-installation

Q: What will happen with the existing backup tool (vzdump) in Proxmox Virtual Environment?
A: You can still use vzdump. The new backup is an additional but very powerful way to backup and restore your VMs and containers.

Q: Is there any recommended server hardware for the Proxmox Backup Server?
A: We recommend enterprise-grade server hardware components, with fast local SSD/NVMe storage. Access and response times from rotating drives will slow down all backup server operations. See https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#recommended-server-system-requirements

Q: Where can I get more information about upcoming features?
A: Follow the announcement forum and pbs-devel mailing list https://lists.proxmox.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pbs-devel, and subscribe to our newsletter https://www.proxmox.com/news.
