I’m exploring different storage options in Proxmox VE and would like to better understand the practical differences between ZFS, iSCSI, and ZFS over iSCSI.

  • When does it make more sense to use ZFS directly on the Proxmox node compared to ZFS over iSCSI?
  • What are the specific benefits of ZFS over iSCSI compared to using the traditional iSCSI protocol with another filesystem?
  • Are there any limitations or special considerations when using ZFS over iSCSI in Proxmox clusters?
Thanks in advance for the help!

for zfs o. iSCSI u need an extra server to offer the service

pur iSCSI has no snapshot and more if its not hosted on zfs

So, the support from proxmox is not how I would wish it. There a some incompatibilities from version to version. zfs o. iSCSI is a really great feature, but proxmox think its not so important to test it or to make it better (support for cluster nodes for instance).

Not op, but in the same boat. I am looking at building a truenas-nas and I am not sure yet how to structure things.

I plan on having three proxmox nodes. Should these mount samba shares? Should I use zfs over iscsi or just iscsi? Should Proxmox Backup Server be running on the nas?

zfs over iscsi sounded perfect, but if it's not production ready yet I am hesitant to try it.
