i have 2 disk drives (DVD burner and BD burner) that i would like to passthrough to 2 different vms. I am finding a lot of info on how to do it under 4.* and 5.* but nothing for 6.* or 7.0. Would following the same steps to pass a HDD to a vm work the same with a DVD drive? Thanks
In principle, there are no differences between PVE 7 and 6, and I don't think it is different from 5.
DVD/BD passthrough is very different from HDD unless you only use discs with plain files on them. This does not include movies, as they use various forms of "encryption".
If you want to burn DVD/DBs, doing it like HDD passthrough will also not work. You'll might be able to use iSCSI or something (but movies still won't work).
Have a look at this thread for some ideas on how to do it. There are more (old) threads like that somewhere in this forum.
EDIT: If you meant SATA or SCSI controller PCI(e) passthrough for HDDs, then yes, it can be used in the same way for SATA or SCSI optical drives. But the much easier way of passing drives (or partitions) to VMs as block devices will only work for simple file based discs (not audio or movies or writing/burning).
