Not quite understanding cloning... or am I?

Hi forum,
I seem to recall that in past versions of Proxmox, a cloned VM (ie, Debian) was an identical copy of the original, including the MAC address.
Now, I understand the warnings about using an exact replica including MAC address when it comes to networking, but what if I want exactly that, to spin up a complete backup when ie the IP address of the Debian installation is assigned via MAC address reservation from the (not Proxmox) firewall?

Yes, I can copy/paste the MAC over from the original to the clone to make an exact copy, but am I missing something and I shouldn't have to do that? Or is my copy/paste method dangerous in any other way, aside from the obvious danger of duplicate MACs?

Thanks for y our time.
