Hi,

TLDR: Proxmox Firewall vs OPNsense vs pfSense?

Lets make it short: I'm addicted to IT, but not a network expert. I thought it could be a good idea to use opnsense instead of pfsense, cause opnsense is community driven and receives more updates. On the other side I read that pfsense fixes security issues faster. But right now, I'm a little bit overwhelmed and I haven't found an up to date tutorial yet.

In the end I failed to setup opnsense by pure intuition, but I came across the fact that Proxmox itself includes a firewall as well and I'm wondering if this could be an advantage and good alternative?

Or is it worth to dig myself deeper into pfsense or opnsense?

Of course the answer is: it depends!

As long as the features of the PVE firewall is sufficient I would stay with it - just to avoid the overhead of an additional, mission critical system which you need to maintain.

But look again at the feature set: opnSense has a zillion bells and whistles, so if those tantalize you... go for it :-)
