I just installed the latest version of proxmox on my computer but for some reason I can't access it through the web GUI. I check my router and it doesn't show that my computer is connected to the network. What should I do?

Is the port you are connecting to a trunked port? You might need to edit your /etc/network/interfaces files

Yeah I definitely got a response. I was running Ubuntu yesterday and didn't have any issues. Just seems weird.

Response from what to what? Its possible you had DHCP and now you set your IP to static and you used wrong subnet. There are probably 10 other possibilities. I highly doubt "trunked port" is one of them. But we cant say because you have not provided any details yet.

Please provide :
ipconfig /all (or equivalent for your OS) from your regular workstation that is functioning
ip a (from PVE)
cat /etc/network/interfaces (from PVE)

please use text encoded in CODE tags if at all possible. Photos of the screen will do as last resort.

We really need a FAQ sticky thread for this and the other 9 or 19 most common problems.

This is asked every day when people don't have any clue about networking but still want to try out PVE and then fail at the first obstacle, because they never used anything else than DHCP and setting a static IP is a too difficult task...

If you use 192.168.100.2/24 this is wrong. If you use some random numbers as the IP it's wrong. Use a free static IP of your routers subnet that is outside of your routers DHCP range.
Don't forget to use "https:" and ":8006" in the browser or it will fail.
Don't leave the gateway or DNS field empty and don't use some random numbers or it will fail.
Dont use Wifi.
Check if the ethernet cable is connected to the correct port and if the cable is working.
Please use google, you should find thousands oder thousands of detailed answers for this.

If thats all not the case and the problem still persists, it would help if you provide the output of ip a, cat /etc/network/interfaces, cat /etc/hosts, cat /etc/resolv.conf, systemctl status pveproxy, results of a ping command from client to server and reverse, as well as a detailed description of what NIC chipset is used, how the devices are connected, what VLAN settings are used, what IP the router got, what IP your client is using.

Stickies already take up more than half of the front-page, so not sure adding 9 more would be productive :)

But perhaps "newbie forum section" might be useful. To be effective these type of threads would need to be moved there, not sure if this forum software can do it.

I thought more about one sticky thread with 10 or 20 questions in the first post, linking to posts that got some detailed troubleshooting. Like:

Post #1:
FAQ:
1.) I can't access the webUI (linked to Post #2)
2.) VM shows wrong RAM usage (linked to post #3)
3.) my node doesn't boot after an power outage
4.) installation from pen drive fails
5.) how to remove "local-lvm" and extend "local"
6.) Why can I not store a 4TB Zvol on my 4TB raidz pool
7.) Why does my node stop working when I shut down the other node of my 2-node cluster
8.) ISO upload fails
9.) what storage should I use
10.) I get IO errors and LVM-Thin/ZFS/root is 100% full
11.) Why is my hosts RAM half full without any guests running
12.) Why is deleting files inside my VM not freeing um space of my VM storage
...

Then something like:

Post #2:
1.) I can't access the webUI
Do you use wifi?
If yes, stop using it and use a wired connection. See here for a reason: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/WLAN
If no, did you verify that the cable isn`t damaged and in case you got multiple ethernet ports that the cable is plugged into the correct port? Run ip a. Do you see a "NO-CARRIER"? If yes you used the wrong port, bad cable or there is a driver problem.
If no, did you install PVE with the default IP 192.168.100.2? If yes, ...

Post #3:
2.) VMs shows wrong RAM usage
Do you use a windows VM? If yes, ...

Even if beginners would still spam the forums with the same question instead of using the forum search or google, we could simply link or quote that FAQ post so we don`t have to spend so much time writing a detailed answer for the same question again and again.
So its more a sticky for easy access for those who want to help and not that beginners will find it easier. If they don't use google to read any of the thousands other threads discussing the same problem they will probably also not read any sticky threads before posting.

But big problem is that only staff members are allowed to edit old posts. Wouldn`t make much sense if we create such a thread and then after half a year we wouldn`t be able to edit it to keep it updated with newer PVE versions. So this should be moderated/written by some staff member.

Figured it out... Turns out I have a faulty network cable. Sad part is I even tried it on my laptop and it worked with no issues. But I appreciate the help and I am sure I am going to have more questions eventually. Trying to teach myself Linux and I am a month in.
