New Hard Disk for PVE Server

Hi All,

I have a server with 160GB SATA Hard Disk; Now, I want to replace this disk with a bigger one (500GB). How can I transfer all data from old disk to new one?

First ideea was a second server...but it's not possible! Other ideea?

I suggest to do it manually as you have no second server.

1. make sure you run the latest version on the old disk.
2. shutdown your VM´s
3. make a backup of your containers with vzdump (to the disk, just make a dir /backup)
4. write down the network config for your installation
5. shutdown the server and unplug your old disk, connect the new one
6. do a fresh install, update to the latest version, set the previously noted network configuration
7. shutdown and connect the old disk as second disk, make sure that your bios boots from the new disk.
8. doublecheck if you really booted the new system
9. mount the old disk
10. restore your container with vzdump
11. restore your KVM VM´s manually, see Migration_of_servers_to_Proxmox_VE

It´s a bit work but the savest way. using thirdparty disk clonig tools do not work as far as I know (they cannot handle LVM).

Much easier is using a second Proxmox VE server in a Cluster. Here you can just migrate your container with one click, also KVM´s (for offline migration of KVM VM´s you have to wait for the first release candidate, available earliest in two weeks)

good ideea!

Anybody test a clone disk with Acronis or n Ghost? This is the easy way...but I want to be 100% about the results...

Also may be as simple as booting a live cd and dd from one disc to the other, then grow the partitions on the new drive.
