Hi,
I have a hosted proxmox with www.seedcafe.info/ with 5 ip's

I was wondering if it is possible to run 2 name servers as vm's on proxmox ? has anyone done this? will it work ?

if so where would the host get it's dns from im thinking it would not be the best idea to point the host at a vm based dns.

can anyone point me in the right direction on this please.

thanks

Col

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

However, it is not advised to have 2 nameservers on same hardware. In case hardware fails - you lost both of your nameservers.

Ideally - you would have primary NS on one server and secondary NS on different server, but also different network (in case of network issues).

Anyway -- yes, there is no reason why you couldn't run 2 DNS servers on VM's.

Regarding:
"if so where would the host get it's dns from im thinking it would not be the best idea to point the host at a vm based dns."
Not sure what you mean :\

If host is Proxmox himself, it could work - but then you are creating a bit 'spaghetti' mess imho.

Cheers,
Aleks

Thanks for your reply,

I went ahead and pointed proxmox host to opendns, and installed 2 dns server in vm's .

Im NO expert on dns so i think im gonna remove the machines as it has made things as you say a bit messy since my proxmox is hosted with seedbox, and im sure the host's dns server are doing something unexpected.

I guess it was a nice thought but not very practical.

Anyways thanks for your reply.

there are no problems. But it is not advisable. second dns is backup if the first machine / link die. recommended even more than 2 DNS
