Moving from VMware ... import or Veeam?

Hi,

As per the title, what works best? Importing a VM directly from an ESXi host into a PVE host or using Veeam to restore a full backup?

I tried using Veeam but when it restores the VM with VMtools installed, it (VMtools) pops up an error message as discussed in this post. If I remove the tools, it removes the network card which then invalidates a software license in the VM.

both options should work but according to some forum posts here veeam for pve is not really production ready yet ...

migrating from esxi to pve will alter your vm's hardware. you will have to uninstall vmware tools and install qemu guest tools / drivers, no way around that.

does the licensed software check the whole hardware or only the mac address of the network card?
you could try copy the mac address of the vm on esxi and set it on the pve vm network adapter. but most likely you will have to reactivate the software
