More information about backup mode Stop (KVM)

In Backup and Restore this description only:

• stop (KVM): Shutdown the VM to get a consistent state, Then start KVM live backup and restart the VM (short downtime).

Where can I get more information about this mode?
I do not understand how to get a consistent state on a running VM
