Good evening, just soliciting opinions here. Do you think it is better to migrate pfSense from VMware to PVE as a VM or back up the configuration and restore to a new VM on PVE?

Migrating pfSense from VMware to PVE

If you can create the same thing using existing settings, it’s standard practice to create a new one.
For example, Microsoft’s backup solution only supports restoration to the same physical machine. This means that if you want to run it on a different physical server, you’ll have to create it from scratch.
You should think of moving or converting disk images in the same way.
Still, everyone wants to take the easy way out, so they convert it.
Since it’s your boss who authorized the conversion and you who carried it out who are responsible for ensuring it works correctly, I won’t stand in the way of that decision.

Ich würde eine saubere Neuinstallation in Betracht ziehen. Kurz einen Export von der aktuellen Konfiguration über Diagnose / Sichern & Wiederherstellen und anschließend in der neu angelegten VM einen Import durchführen. Vorteil, man kann sich über die Partitionierung etc. Gedanken machen, ob man es nicht ändern möchte. Eine Neuinstallation ist innerhalb von 10 Minuten erledigt und die Sicherung stellt 10 Sekunden wieder her. Die Pakete werden automatisch, anhand der Sicherungsinformationen automatisch installiert. In diese Richtung habe ich auch gedacht. Eine Gelegenheit, die Partitionierung anzupassen, vielleicht etwas mehr Speicherplatz hinzuzufügen und eine saubere Neuinstallation durchzuführen, auf die ich dann meine Konfiguration übertragen kann.
