Matrix LCD to show load status

New to Proxmox from ESX. I'm running 1.7 VE Kernal Linux 2.6.32-4-pve and am wondering if anyone has a tutorial or can tell me if it's even possible to get a 4x24 matrix Serial LCD working with it to show server load and such. The model I have is a HD44780 and it's serial based. I am only just starting with Debian so my knowledge is limited so be kind and if all you can give me is a nudge in the right direction so be it. Google turns up alot of hits for debian but nothing prebuilt for the kernal that proxmox is using.
