Hello everyone. Real newb here. Decided to work on some pc projects while I'm down with chemotherapy for lymphoma. Familiar with personal Win Pc's, I unfortunately hahave not much understanding of servers.

What I'd like work on:
Home Asssistant
Media Server
AI Photo manager (totally replacing google photos
etc.......

I purchased from amazon a GK3Plus mini pc. Realize now it likely wasn't best choice, but maybe it's something I can at least learn on.
Should I even be considering using Proxmox (seems like everyone is yes, yes, yes)

I THINK I'm pretty good at searching for info, but this has me stumped. I THINK I'm getting stuck at Management Network Configurator during installation / setup. I have no idea what to put on the screen for hosnam, ip, gateway, dns service. Can I just use what's supplied? My guess is I have to find out that info,.. Would someone be able to dumb this down to newb speak for me or at least tell e how / where to find the info.

Thanks in Advance!
Bill N

( I am willing to fully write over the OS that came with the mini pc. In fact I think I already have since I've gotten to that point.)

You „simply“ define the static IP address of your PVE. It should be an IP of your local network (for example: 192.168.0.20). If you’re not sure check your router‘s management gui. It should „tell“ you on what subnet you’re „sitting“. If your router handles DHCP (IP address leases for clients) be sure to use an IP which is not used in the DHCP pool of your router to avoid collisions. You can set your router‘s IP as DNS and gateway for your PVE. If your router doesn’t support DNS (which is very unlikely) you can use one of the big DNS like Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Google (8.8.8.8) or Quad9 (9.9.9.9).

Good luck with your chemo ;-)

Hi Bill: Uses the Porxmox VE ISO boot your mini pc, after go through to following installation step, enter the static IP you want to use, and then you can go to Next step.

After installation finished and system rebooted. you can use any web browser with port 8006 connect to your mini pc. (ex. https://your.ip.addr:8006)

don't use an official domain ending like .com
if an offical host with the name pve1.lab.com exists then DNS will redirect you to to that website instead to the pve web ui, letsencrypt certs and other stuff will not work or fail completely.

what to use? .local (conflicts with mDNS?) or .internal seems fine

Thanks for attention to not use official dns in FQDN.
