hi .. im having a strange situation with my proxmox 4.0 ... just a few days ago i was able to log in as root in the web GUI and via SSH ... today i found myself lock out of my proxmox ... cant login via console ... ssh ... or web GUI ... root user or password its not identified ... when i saw the server's display it appears to had have some kind of problem with raw data or something like that... can u help me please i need to regain access to my server ... i've tried the grub edit but to no avail ... i must have being doing something wrong...thanks in advance

first of all ... thanks for the reply ... i have tried the procedure .. but i have another problem ... proxmox filesystem it's LVM2 so i boot with a partedmagic live cd and i cant mount the filesystem ... it says that is not recognized .. so back to square one .. im kind of a newbee in this things so please be patient ...

Download a Ubuntu Desktop 17.10 and run the try Ubuntu.
Than you have all disk mounted and you have a GUI with a file browser.

Than you can follow the wiki.

well this is getting really strange i manage to use SystemRescueCD to mount LVM2 filesystem .. then i mounted /dev/pve/root i thought that its was the correct volume to mount since i have a problem with root login ... i explore the mount point directory structure and find the home dir empty ... that was rare ... then i used passwd --root /mnt/disk root command to change root password ... it came back with CANNOT DETERMINE YOUR USERNAME ... the i use useradd --root /mnt/disk prueba to create a new user ... no error but when i put passwd --root /mnt/disk prueba the same error ... and the home dir still in blank ... i kind of feel that this is hopeless ... so i change my original question ... i just need to copy my virtual HDD from the server and i can just reinstall proxmox ... not big deal ... but this HDD are really big and for example /dev/pve/vm-301-disk-1 is 610 GB ... how can i do that ...

I would take a second disk (could be a small one) and install on that disk PVE.
After you have a running PVE you can use the lvm from the big disk and start your VM.

Alternative you can copy with dd the disk to a file.

well i resolve this ... with the systemrecueCD ... i mounted /dev/pve/root/ went to /etc/passwd change root arguments to root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
and i was able to login without password ... now i going to save my VM ... and do a clean install ... thanks all for your help and concern
