Linked clone results in full clone

My home lab has very limited storage, and in order to be able to quickly spin up 'burner' Windows VMs, I am trying to use a linked clone from a template. The cloning process appears to complete with no errors, but there is no evidence of the linked clone's 'parent'. To prove a point, I can remove the template and the 'linked clone' still boots.

My PVE install is a fresh install using the default install options, and digging deep into the node configuration is a bit daunting.

I have tried various SCSI controllers and Hard Disk configurations (IDE/SAATA) for the template with no difference. I though creating linked clones was fairly bulletproof but maybe I am missing something? any suggestions?

Hi Xierion,

I assume you use LVM-thin as the storage backend? In this case this is to be expected. It's actually nice, as that way you could also migrate those 'linked-clones' between clusternodes. On other storage backends like ZFS the effect you expected would strike!

If you are very limited on storage, just go for 'burn-after-reading' ;)

Best,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel,
It looks light the default install uses LVM-Thin for the disk images, which explains it.
