I have just read this 2014 benchmarks from Phoronix, which shows that for real wold workloads the difference between Real hardware and KVM is at max 5% ( kernel compile time)
So I don't think at the momment there is a need to use OpenVZ only for the sake of performance. Management tools from openvz are a plus though.
