KVM - reload OS, increase memory / diskspace questions

Hello, This question is in regard to KVM. how do we reload the OS , increase memory(RAM) and diskspace for the kvm vm? Any tutorial/reference/tricks that we ca refer to for managing kvm on proxmox?

All the above can be done easily by WEB-GUI. It´s self-explaining. It´s recommended to become familiar with it.


reload the OS, increase memory(RAM) and diskspace for the kvm

- reload:

select machine -> click Reset

- increase RAM:

select machine -> select Hardware-Tab -> select Memory -> click Edit -> follow the instructions

- increase diskspace:

Note: vm changes take effect after machine´s shutdown and start - a simple restart (reload) is not enough!

Hello Mr holmes, Thanks you , once again. You have been so helpful throughout my journey through using proxmox. I tried to reset the vm but it is still giving me black screen. It did not reload the OS (i mean brand new windows again) How do we reload to another OS for the vm? eg. change from windows to ubuntu or windows 2003 to windows 2012?

to "reload" (better: reinstall) a new OS in the vm, edit the vm CD, set it to load the .iso file of the installation media of the desired OS, then ensure that the boot options allow CD to load first than disk, then reboot (restart) the vm, you will see the OS installation screen.

? this is just what is needed, follow again the steps: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Installation#Virtual_Machines_.28KVM.29

1) be sure to have a storage (nfs share or local) enabled for ISO files
2) upload your installation .iso file on that storage (select that storage, then use web gui button to upload)
3) stop the vm to be reinstalled.
4) edit its CD/DVD, and set it to use an .iso image file
5) select the storage, and then the .iso you uploaded in step 2)
6) edit the vm boot order ("options" tab, iirc)
7) in the first list, be sure to have CD/DVD, leave your vm disk in the second list.
8) start the vm, open the console (web gui button "console")
9) you should see the .iso media working, eg: a splash screen and some instruction on how to install.
10) once ended the OS install, as usual "remove" the CD/DVD, ie: simply edit your vm config and set it to use "no disk"

if you want you can skip steps 6 & 7, if you fully load the console before starting the vm (start the vm from the fully loaded console, pressing the "start" button), you should see the BIOS POST screens loading, which also inform you that you can press F12 to select the boot media, and thus select explicitly CD/DVD (to load your configured .iso), just be ready to press F12 & then select the right number proposed, or retry.

the console is java based and the 'send key' doesn't have f12..
how do you send 'f12' to the system?

...have you tried the obvious? I just tried to be perfectly sure: hit F12 on your keyboard ;) it works...

if it doesn't, try to click in the black console window, just to be sure that the console window has the focus... having the focus, your standard F12 does the trick

Thanks for such a simple clear walkthrough, took me 2 minutes to make the changes and reload with a new OS :)
