From another thread I remembered that something was written regarding 2.6.24 as the next stable openvz-kernel (but that was an etch to lenny discussion so i would add here):

I would also like to switch to 2.6.29, but ...

Seems that OpenVZ still now know whats there next stable release.

However it seems to me (at least since March 2009) a little bit more it´s not 2.6.24 but 2.6.27? And not enough, 2.6.24 and 2.6.26 could be dropped in future? -> http://community.livejournal.com/openvz/27178.html?thread=71466#t71466


So are there any plans to upgrade to 2.6.27? I would prefer a newer kernel anyway and when 2.6.24 would be dropped (maybe) why stay on that one?

Is there any way i could manually compile 2.6.27 with OpenVZ/KVM and use it with Proxmox? I'm trying to set up a multipurpose home server (MythTV, samba, apache, etc.) and i need 2.6.26 or later for hardware support.

I see also that Debian Sid has 2.6.26-openvz kernel in the repo. Can I use that one with openvz?

I have compiled a 2.6.27 kernel with openvz patch these days and at a first look it worked so far with already setup openvz guest on Proxmox-VE. However currently I did not have luck with KVM. It´s enabled in the kernel but I guess that there is something additional to do (like getting some newer kvm or qemu stuff and install). I think I would try again soon. If somebody have a hint to save some time it would be nice.

Edit: It seems regarding KVM it was just a Java problem with my browser so maybe it´s already ok. Would test this a little bit more...

Is this a pve-kernel to use with proxmox?
Can you make that one available to the community together with the other pve-*.deb packages you compiled?

No it´s no "pve-kernel". Those kernels came from the nice proxmox guys. - And there are no pve*.deb packets compiled from me. It´s just a vanilla kernel that got openvz patch and the net-socket-security patch applied. KVM and openvz are running now and looks good. But I have not testet this to much at all.

But what about http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/kernel/2.6.27/2.6.27-chistyakov.1 kernel branch? Latest release is from 25 Dec 2009. It is possible to add this newer openvz kernel to proxmox ve repository as option for testing? In same maner as http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Proxmox_VE_Kernel

Reason for use for me is new dbus service incompatibilty with older kernels. As described on end of bugreport http://bugzilla.openvz.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1384 requested feature is implemented in newer kernels. Dbus service is necesarry to run graphical interface inside OpenVZ container. Remote desktop can be accessed using www.nomachine.com FreeNX.

Just do it if you have enough spare time - we simple do not have the resources. But you will never get the same status as 2.6.24, which is in use for about 2 years and is very well tested.

There is new simple howto on openvz wiki which describe installation of openvz kernel 2.6.27 on Debian.

I have installed it on test node and all virtual machines are running good so far.
