Hello everyone,
It's not an urgent issue, but I happened to have an older USB drive with Proxmox 8.1 (running kernel 6.5.11-4) and a spare machine to experiment with.
The machine is an older Dell R420 with plenty of RAM, four drives, and a PERC 310 Mini RAID controller.
The PERC controller is managing a single virtual mirrored RAID, so Proxmox sees it as a single disk. The installation of this version of Proxmox went as expected—no issues. The system installed fine, rebooted multiple times, and everything was running smoothly.
Then, I ran apt update & dist-upgrade to upgrade to the latest version, which installed kernel 6.8.12-8. However, after restarting, the system failed to boot and dropped into initramfs, unable to detect the disk—though the partitions were visible, indicating a potential LVM issue.
Multiple reinstall attempts resulted in the same problem.
Interestingly, if I boot upgraded instalation using the original kernel (6.5.11-4), everything works fine, which suggests it’s not a hardware issue (yes, I’m aware Proxmox doesn’t officially support RAID, but let’s set that aside for now).
I also tried installing Proxmox 8.3 directly (which comes with a kernel around 6.8.11 or similar), but it failed to install altogether on the same hardware.
Has anyone encountered this issue or found a solution?
I've tried various troubleshooting steps—forcing LVM, debugging, reinstalling the kernel, ensuring the megaraid module is loaded, and more—but no luck.
Long story short: Everything works fine on kernel 6.5.11, but fails with kernel 6.8.12.
Any insights would be appreciated!
Thanks!
