Is it possible to securely back up to a removable USB stick?

Hi, I am exploring the possibility of backing up to a USB that can be removed without the risk of damaging the device or getting error messages such as ‘incorrectly disconnected’. I know that the ideal is to ‘eject’ the USB before removing it, but I would like to know if there are alternatives to make this more automatic or to prevent any problems without the need for this manual step.

Hi,
Proxmox Backup Server version 3.3 introduced removable datastores, see the highlights here: https://pbs.proxmox.com/wiki/index.php/Roadmap#Proxmox_Backup_Server_3.3

This provides the mechanisms to guarantee consistent state when removing the USB device, and can be scripted/automated via the api/cli.

Note however, I would recommend against using an USB stick as reliable datastore, they are known to be slow an error prone. Might be good enough to transfer data however.

hi I still don't see it and it still doesn't go, do you know why?
For this to work, the USB disk needs to be reformatted/wiped first, then you can create a new datastore on it, clicking the removable datastore checkbox in the Add Datastore window. Also, make sure you are running the latest PBS version.
