I am trying to install Proxmox 8.2.1 or 8.2.2, both stop at loading drivers.
I read somewhere that you can install Debian and then load PVE on top of that.
I am wondering if that is still a viable solution or if things have moved on from that.
The post was back in 2019 that I saw. If it is viable, which release is recommended
at this point to start as a base.

Hi,

what exactly are the last messages printed when you try to start the installer?

Hard to say anything specific without any more precise information.
More often than not it's due to an installed Nvidia card, which can be worked around by adding the nomodeset kernel parameter.

As you say, you can also install on top of Debian by yourself if that doesn't work, as documented in Install Proxmox VE on Debian.
You'd start with the latest, up-to-date system, i.e. Debian 12 "Bookworm".

During the installation is stops at:

loading drivers: nvidiafb ahci nvme wmi intel_pmc_core pinctrl_alderlake mac_hid acpi_pad video acpi_tad intel_hid spi_intel_pci
xhci_pci i2c_i801 acpi_cpufreq rtc_cmos efi_pstore pcspkr intel_cstate rapl aesni_intel sha1_ssse3 sha256_ssse3 ghash_clmulni_intel
polyval_clmulni crc32_pclmul crct10dif_pclmul kvm_intel intel_powerclamp x86_pkg_temp_thermal Intel_tcc_cooling Intel_uncore_frequency
intel_rapl_common

That's it. Stops at the same spot in 'debug' mode. No previous errors before reaching this point.

I have another box that I successfully installed about 6 months ago using the same installation media (proxmox 8.2.1 iso burned to CD) so I don't think that is the problem.

loading drivers: nvidiafb
That's the culprit - there are already other threads on the forum about it.

The nomodeset setting got me past it. Thanks.
Great to hear! Please just mark the thread as SOLVED by editing the first post - there should be a dropdown near the title field. This helps others find this thread more easily :)
