Hello,

I get a grub error when trying to install ProxMox VE 8.3 on my new Hardware:
  • Supermicro H13SAE-MF
  • Ryzen 9 7950X
  • 2 x 48GB Kingston Server Premier DDR5
  • 2 x NVMe M.2 SSD
This is the first time I bought a "Server" Mainboard and maybe it's rather here the problem than the ProxMox installation

I googled already around but could not find a solution.

Here is what I tried already out:
  • Multiple downloads of the ISO
  • Multiple Flashes with Rufus and Etcher
  • Multiple different USB Sticks
  • Deactivated TPM 2.0, Secure Boot is disabled
Every time it tries to load the Installation I am stuck on this screen:

Code:
error: no such device: /.disk/info
error: no such device: /.disk/mini-info

What I discovered with Google is that I should type commands to mount the /boot of the USB, but that is sadly not possible cause it never enters the GRUB prompt to type anything.

One way I haven't tried yet is the installation via Supermicro IPMI cause I have no experience yet with it, and I thought I could simply install the server like I always do.

Kind regards,
Nickel

Secure Boot is disabled
Are you sure you have disabled ALL secure settings. I don't have your BIOS/MB but often there are other settings like secure-devices & fastboot etc. - ALL of these should be disabled.

2 x NVMe M.2 SSD
Are those SSDs completely wiped or were they being used before?

If all else fails - see if you can install plain Debian on it. Maybe then you will discover what makes it work or you could install Proxmox on top of Debian.

One other thought - have you installed a CMOS BIOS battery correctly? I've had it myself that if the battery is incorrect (or low-voltage) the BIOS settings are not retained. Get your multimeter out & check the voltage of that battery.

I will check if I missed some secure settings in the bios.

The 2 SSD are completely empty and new

I will try to install plain Debian and see if that works out

The CMOS BIOS battery is fine the changes are correctly saved.

I tried different USB Ports from the mainboard still having the same problem sadly, it is really frustrating.
Installed Proxmox on 4 different devices without a problem and I am completely stuck here at the moment

The Installer now started without a problem, I don't know why I left it in the error state for 30 minutes and then I suddenly could install it. I have no idea why sadly

As the other forum members mentioned, please make sure all secure settings are disabled and that your firmware for your motherboard is up-to-date. Is the motherboard new (not used)?

Well, Mainboard Bios is up to date there is no newer version, and Proxmox is now installed and working. Somehow leaving the error message for more than 30 mins ( I was looking up while leaving it like that how the IPMI works ) and I suddenly saw the Proxmox GUI for the Installation

But I cannot say why it suddenly worked

Happy you got it sorted out.

The CMOS BIOS battery is fine the changes are correctly saved.
The only way to know that the BIOS settings are retained via the CMOS battery is to disconnect the MB from all power supply/s. While connected to any power supply it will retain the settings through the AC current.

Hello,

I have nearly the same configuration. And I get the same error. My solution was to install Proxmox from a USB-Stick without a monitor attached to the system. I use the IPMI-Webinterface (console) as "monitor". It works without waiting 30 minutes as mentioned above.

I think the error has something to do with the onboard GPU.

Hello to all
I have the exact same problem bit waiting 1 hour didn't change anything.
Anyone knows a solution for this error?

Thanks

Hi Michelr,

How do you connect your monitor? HDMI/DP or VGA?

I installed proxmox via the IPMI-console as descriped above.

Hi Mirk_daniel
Thank you. Sorry that i did not try this. Until now I dried HDMI an DP both with the same problem. I was not in the IPMI thing until now. I have installed Proxmox on a thinclient and it was 3 minutes and go and runs for month now.
Now we bought a "Real" Server and it doesnt work at all.
I have a B650D4U-2L2T/BCM Mainboard from ASrock. So if i define a IP in the BIOS I can acess it via Browser and Install Proxmox "Headless"?
Im very glad if you can help me. I wasted 3 hours today without any sucess.
I weil, will give it a New try on sunday.

Hi michelr,

I have a different mainboard. Do you have a VGA output? If yes please give it a try an connect the monitor to the VGA output.

In my case I have a different video-output on the HDMI/DP and the video-output on the IPMI-console. The video-output on the IPMI-console shows the normal setup of proxmox while the output on the HDMI shows the grub error at the same time.

I didn’t read much more topics on forums… But I think the onboard graphic card is connected to the VGA and the IPMI-console. And the Ryzen on the chip graphic card is connected to the HDMI/DP. But this ist only a guess. I found some topics where disabeling the onboad graphic card helps. But sometimes disabeling the onboard graphic Card disable the IPMI console too. And this was no option for me. But this was always Supermicro related!!

I don‘t know anything about your ASRock mainboard. In my case on every Supermicro mainboard with IPMI is a smal sticker with the serial number and the initial password for the user „admin“. All I must do is connect the IPMI networkcard to the switch and open the webinterface (Supermicro uses http/https on the Standard Ports 80/443). The networkcard is on DHCP by default. And in my Rack I don‘t connect a monitor to the server anyway.

Maybe it helps you anyway ;)

Greetings Daniel

Hey @mirk_daniel

Thank you very much for the help!
I tried a old vga monitor. I found our that hdmi is Graphic on Processor and vga on bmc...
Than it worked until next error. I had to set the nomodeset variable.
Now proxmox is running!

Thanks to all
Michael

I have this board, seems to be HDMI issue as well, while the error shows

error: no such device; /.disk/info.

Just logged into IPMI and remote console and there is the installation screen...

After installing it still won't output to HDMI. Maybe CPU is too new and supermicro may solve this in a new bios, not sure..

CPU: 9900X

Anyway I am ok with IPMI console access.
