I am trying to install proxmox using a USB drive onto a server that was previously running Ubuntu LTS 22.04.2.

I downloaded the latest version from https://www.proxmox.com/en/downloads and chose the Proxmox VE 8.1 ISO Installer

Here is the error:
command 'unsquashfs -f -dest /target -i /cdrom/pve-base.squashfs' failed with an exit code of 1 at /usr/share/perl5/Proxmox/Install.pm line 906.

Turns out, the installer was constantly trying to access the CDROM instead of the USB drive. I decided to try burning a DVD and using that as the install and then it seemed to work just fine. Hopefully this helps someone.

I know this is old, but for folks who come looking like I did. .. I got this error installing 8.2. I tried 7.4 and it installed fine. I found some had success with newer USB drives, some didn't. I had a USB 3.0 HDD enclosure and a 500GB SSD. I put the install ISO on that drive and then it installed without a flaw. So this seems to be tied to the USB drive. It isn't clear. It isn't obvious, but that's what worked for me. Installing 8.2 on a N100 Mini PC.
