I’ve been running Proxmox VE for about two years now, and up until recently, I haven’t had any major issues, at least nothing I couldn’t figure out with a bit of Googling or help from a friend who’s been using Proxmox for five years, he has never had this happen or seen it happen before.
But about two weeks ago, the WebUI started acting up. Every disk in the system, including the one Proxmox is installed on, shows up as "offline" or "unknown." If I try to check any storage detail, like drive sizes, ISOs, or assigned VMs/LXCs, the UI just stops updating. The only things that keep running are the uptime timers and resource monitors.
If I refresh the page, I can’t log back in. I also can’t open consoles, access my VMs or LXCs, or power cycle anything from the WebUI. I know everything is still running, because I can still access the services on my VMs and LXCs just fine. I can also ping and SSH into the host and any guest machines that have SSH access enabled.
The only temporary fix I’ve found is restarting the pvestatd service, which brings the WebUI back, for about five minutes before it breaks again. I’ve tried different browsers (Firefox is my main one, but I also tested Chrome, Opera (GX), Edge, and even Chrome and Firefox on my phone), but the problem is the same across all of them.
I googled potential fixes for this issue but all the ones I found were for a cluster of machines and not a single machine like my setup
Hardware:
Ryzen 9 5900x
128 GB Corsair Vengence DDR4 3200 Mhz
NVIDIA GTX 1660 (used for GPU passthrough on a Windows VM for friends to play games)
3 480gb Kingston A400 SSDs (Proxmox is installed on one of these)
2 1TB Crucial P3 NVMe Drives
