I recommend upgrading from 8.4 to 9.

Hi everyone, I would like to upgrade my 3-node cluster from version 8.4 to 9, but I'm reading around that it's better to also upgrade the PBS. Could someone suggest which of the two I should upgrade first, upgrade the nodes first and then the PBS, or vice versa? First the PBS and then the nodes?

It's only necessary when you co-install PBS with PVE (on the same system). If PBS runs on another computer, in a container or in a VM then you can update either whenever you want as PVE 9 works fine with PBS 3 and PBS 4 works fine with PVE 8. But if then are installed on the same (bare-metal) computer they share the kernel and the Debian user system and you should update both.

No, my PBS is installed on a dedicated machine, where only PBS runs, so do you recommend that I update all the nodes first, and then the PBS later? And if something goes wrong, can I always restore my VMs from my PBS that hasn't been updated yet?

Then it does not matter in which order you upgrade. And you don't have to update PBS and/or PVE any time soon, either. Just do what you think is best before August 2026.
