Hello,

I want to test proxmox ve and I've read that all harddisk data will be erased and that the partions are automatically created. Because I don't want my system to be destroyed I plan installing proxmox onto an esata drive (or is usb also possible?).

Will my plan work?
- detach all internal harddisks
- attach esata drive
- install proxmox
- reattach the internal drives
- select the esata drive during boot if I want to startup proxmox

Is it a problem that the drive "letter" changes from sda to sdd? Or does proxmox uses uuid? Or is there even a boot option to specify the destination harddisk?

Cheers

I did the installation with detached drives, justed changed one mount point in /etc/fstab and now I have a sweet installation on the external drive :)

But having proxmox running inside vmware is also a nice option. Can I also start KVM instances or just openvz ones?
