How to activate the 2nd nic?

I'm currently a bit lost on how to activate the 2nd network device on one of my servers. The device is activated in BIOS but when I plugin a network cable, nothing changes and the card reports "no carrier". Also, the usual lights on the port itself do not light up.

However, both the cable and receiving port on the other end are working fine.

I've already tried several things in the UI or in the shell (like ifup, ip link, ...) but am groping a bit blind.

Hmm, I guess you have already tried different cables and connecting it to something else on the other side? That could also be a computer/laptop for testing purposes and does not need to be a switch.

If it really does not light up and is still reported as "DOWN" if you run for example ip a, then there could be a chance, that it is faulty.

If available, try if there are BIOS and firmware updates available for your server, it might help.
