Hello, sorry if this is a question already posted several times but I still have doubts. By default proxmox assigns 4GB of root partition Mine is currently about 2.5GB Is there a need to increase it? Why? Is there a logic to choose the amount of space to allocate?
Thank you so much for your time

By default, the installer splits the available space on your selected hard drive between your root-disk for the system and a thin-pool for VM and container data and images.

It sounds like you did not specifically set the 4GB limit on install, which implies you are running Proxmox on a very small storage device, what are you using?

To answer your question though, while it is possible to have Proxmox running on such a small partition, you will run into storage problems very soon, as that is just not a sufficient amount to do any real work with it.

My final configuration will be this:

SSD 120GB for local pve
NVME 500GB for VM and Container (Windows server 2022 Standard + Turnkey fileserver Container)
2 x 1TB WDRED in ZFS pool mirror for share
1xUSB 60GB external for ISO files and Templates
2xUSB 1TB external for backup files

I would not use the 120GB total for local vpe because I will often use Clonezilla to clone the primary disk and I don't want to waste too much time

It is not a problem to leave unallocated disk space to make everything faster

I thank you

In my opinion 16-32GB is a good size for the root filesystem. Logs will grow over time and if I remember right, PVE is here using 12-14GB right now. And then you want some additional free space. Let's say you for example want to upload an 8 GB ISO to your USB ISO storage through the webUI. PVE will upload that 8 GB file to "/var/tmp" first and then move it to your USB ISO storage. So if you don't got this 8GB of free space for storing temporary files the upload will fail.

Also make sure not to buy any "WD Reds". You need "WD Red Plus" or "WD Red Pro" for ZFS, as the cheap WD Reds without Plus/Pro will use SMR.
