Help with utilizing root for backup storage space

Hello,
I'm hoping to get help utilizing some of my root partition to be used in my backup datastore. My backup location is currently only about 100GB and is completely full. My root partition is almost 200GB. I'd like to allocate some of that space to the backup location. Will someone help explain to me the steps I need to take?

you can create a new datastore anywhere on the root partition, but there is no simple way to use that space on an existing datastore that is on a seperate partition i'm afraid
