HBA that's passed through to a guest OS - spin down question

setup
- HBA in IT mode that's passed through to a guest OS (Linux distro)
- several SAS HDDs connected to HBA

I want to spin down the SAS HDDs when unused. Do I need to set the spin down on the guest OS or on the host?

Thanks!

If your HBA is in IT mode and passed through to a VM, the Proxmox host no longer has visibility or control over the disks. All power‑management, SMART, and spin‑down settings must be configured inside the guest OS, because the guest is the one directly controlling the HBA.

Note that many SAS drives don’t support automatic idle spin‑down, so you may need to use sdparm or sg_start (in sg3-utils), or verify whether your specific SAS models support standby modes at all.
