Having trouble installing proxmox ontop of Debian 11

I have an old hpe DL380 Gen5 that I'm trying to install proxmox on to. So far I have tried...

Attempt 1: Downloading the iso to a bootable thumb drive and plugin directly into server. The iso image will not even attempt to boot.

Attempt 2: Install proxmox ontop of Debian 11 following instructions from https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Install_Proxmox_VE_on_Debian_11_Bullseye.
When I run "apt install proxmox-ve postfix open-iscsi" and then select local it starts the install then I get this error:

Errors were encountered while processing:
/tmp/apt-dpkg-install-BQP8Z4/204-pve-qemu-kvm_7.1.0-4_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Question: Can I get the install for an older proxmox version like 5?

You really should not run a PVE below version 7 as neither Proxmox packages nor Debian packages will get any security patches.

I'm sure there is a way to debug why 204-pve-qemu-kvm_7.1.0-4_amd64.deb failed. Maybe someone else knows how to do that. Dpkg got a "--debug" flag but not sure what octal would be reasonable.

I did'nt know since my sever is so old if version 7 was going to have any issues running on it.

  • Try the usb stick in a laptop to test.
  • If the screen switches off, the Grub may have set a resolution your screen doesn't like. Just press Enter to continue. Give it a couple of minutes to load the installer.
  • I have a HP laptop that won't boot the usb image (just displays "welcome to grub" and locks up) but successfully boots the same image from DVD ! .
