Hardware requirements for VMs on Proxmox

Are there any hard technical requirements for running VMs on Proxmox? I'm asking because I got the KVM error every time I started Proxmox, but the bios does not offer any virtualization settings. As I couldn't get any VM up an running, I wonder if there are hardware limitations to virtualization, but I would assume that this was not the problem.

The machine I installed it on was an ideacentre 510s-08IKL.

Documentation states

  • Intel VT/AMD-V capable CPU/motherboard for KVM full virtualization support

So, I assume KVM is not a hard requirement for virtualization, right? Would the performance of virtual machines be unbearable for use as a daily driver? If somebody shared some experience of how severe the impairment by missing KVM is that would be highly appreciated.
