Hey,

I must run a program on vm of Windows. The program needs directx9. Windows see: cirrus logic gd 5446. Can I increase the power of the GPU? Or otherwise get around this?

I found: http://virgil3d.github.io/ How it works and it can help me?

I think you cant now use gpus on qemu/kvm. probably in future spice video driver & viewer could help, not sure.

about virgil3d:

"Current status

  • The project is currently under research and development.
  • It is not ready for distribution.
  • There is no current roadmap or date for when it will be ready for distribution.
  • The project will hopefully be implemented as part of the upstream projects once some sort of API stability can be found and maintained.
  • At this time the project is interested in finding collaborators and developers who are working on similar ideas and would like to discuss how they could get involved and would like input on other use cases that could be accommodated within the scope of this project.
  • The project isn't currently for end users, earlier adopters, or benchmarking article writers. "

so I guess it's of no use for you.

Ok. Right.

I have Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1225 and Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller. Maybe I can add more RAM to GPU?

no, your physical gpu means nothing to qemu/kvm.
it always uses an emulated card (see choices in vm config), and that's always powered by your cpu. So, the best physical cpu, the better.

I remember that spice can (will) leverage gpu power on the viewer side, so that could help (when and if it will ever be ready) but I'm not sure.

Maybe other hypervisors could help you there, but not proxmox/qemu/kvm, atm.

(in future, something could be on the way, but it could be a looong looong way... :-D
