So I've got a 5 node cephfs cluster with substantial storage use.

I've also got a PBS server, but with limited hard drive space.

Limited to the point where it is not possible to add enough storage to the PBS server to do a 1:1 copy of the CephFS at all.

What I do have, is a tape library connected and configured on PBS that can do a full 1:1 copy of the CephFS (as well as daily incrementals, et al.).

Is there a supported path forward to back up the CephFS directly to tape without having to have an intermediary datastore?

no that is currently not possible. tape backup in pbs has always a datastore as source.

Is that on the roadmap? Perhaps a way of adding CephFS as a pre-existing datastore?

I've manually mounted it before, however it can't auto-populate the data in its current existing locations. Nor does it seem to identify an arbitrary file structure.
