Hi,

For different reasons I'd like to fully reinstall my PVE server. It is up and running right now, si I'm preparing everything for a full restore of the VMs.

If I simply backup the VM using the UI is it enough ? Does the .zst file also contains metadata like network, CPU, RAM settings ?

Thanks,

gUI

Yes, the vzdump does contain all you need to restore a VM or a CT to another Proxmox host (or the same after a reinstallation). One thing that is not included in the backup itself is the current ID of the VM: although it is in the backup file name, you'll be asked for an ID when you restore the VM.
Remember to use the same bridge and storage names and the restore should go flawlessly.

Great, so this make me think about the PVE configuration itself. Something more clever than a screenshot of the Network and Disk tabs ? :)

A copy of /etc/pve (or even the whole /etc) is always a safe choice. For the network you might be able to use the same /etc/network/interfaces, but that is going to depend on how Linux names your nics after reinstall (the how and why are another story).

For the disk layout depends a lot on your current storage. Getting the output of fdisk -l, pvdisplay, lvdisplay, zpool list, zfs list might be useful.

And a screenshot or two won't hurt either!
