First time Proxmox cluster, add nodes one at a time?

Hello,

I have 3 servers, is it possible to install Proxmox on one server and do a hardware to kvm migration of an another server, repeating the upgrade until all the original servers are rebuilt with Proxmox and I have a 3 node cluster?

I am interested in using Proxmox cluster to replace a cluster of three hardware servers running various sites in an "all in one" type configuration. I am limited in resources and can get fresh set of hardware to run Proxmox on. I have cleared one server of services and I am in the process of upgrading the hardware and firmware.

I realise that less than a 3 node proxmox setup is considered bad form but it would be a temporary situation.

Any advice also welcome for a backend storage solution best practice, I would like live migration of both KVM and containers.

Yes. You can start with one PVE node and add more and move machines around. If you are not using shared storage, be sure to name the storage the same on every node. For example, I have two nodes pve1 and pve2 each with local ZFS storage. If I name them "zfs1" on pve1 and "zfs2" on pve2 I cannot use the PVE migration utility. If I name them "zfstank" on both nodes, I can use the PVE migration utility to move the VMs.
