Hi everyone,
I'm not new to virtualization having worked with Hyper-V and XCP-NG in the past so I am now trying out Proxmox for a small homelab setup. My current specs are as follows.
Building in SC846 chassis with 24 drive bays
SM X9DRi-LN4F+ server board with 128GB ECC RAM (have another 128GB available to add if needed)
x2 Samsung EVO 500GB SSD for the OS and ISO storage
x2 Intel DC S3700 400GB Enterprise SSD for the VM storage
For now, I have installed the OS in a ZFS mirror on the Samsung drives. For the VM storage and creation I will put on the Intel drives. My first question is, would it make sense to mirror the Intel drives as well for the VM storage for redundancy? Or will it be okay running them on one SSD?
I plan to use Unraid as a NAS only and I have an HBA in IT mode that will be passed through to the VM, as well as the internal USB port for the license. I've read the pros and cons on running Unraid as a VM as compared to bare metal, but as I am very limited on physical space at this time, I want to consolidate as I can until I can build a dedicated server room to spread out my hardware better. The Unraid server will have all my media and music files so pretty much a media server.
In addition, I have put together a baremetal TrueNAS server from a repurposed HP Z420 machine with 32GB ECC RAM that I will use as a backup server for my PC's, important files and the VMs. I have also considered using PBS since I read that is a better tool to use when it come to performing backups.
As an option, I do have a Dell R210 II available that I could use for PVE bare metal and therefore run Unraid bare metal but of course all that RAM in the SC846 would be somewhat wasted.
Does this sound like a decent setup or do adjustments need to be made?
