Hi,

I have a local PBS installation that holds backups from my PVE cluster. For additional protection, I wanted to set up a remote PBS to pull-sync those backups offsite. Settings up, this seemed a straight forward task.

Checking back today, I found this:

Encountered errors while syncing namespace - Failed to retrieve backup groups from remote - http request timed out

Not sure what this means but what comes to mind is that also from within my cluster, when I want to look up the available backups, it takes 5-10 tries before they get listed and the first couple of times, the request just times out. Maybe this is related?

What can I do to make the sync (and possible also the local listing) work?

Thanks!

request timed out
Any chance that the PBS datastore is living on rotating rust?

We all know the official documentation recommends/requires SSD storage for the PBS pool. My personal attempt to ignore this and use classical harddisks led to timeouts on various stages of backup/verify and also when I just tried to get the list of backups in the webgui. Of course at the beginning all was fine without any problem. Then they occured "sometimes" - and a second try was succesfull. Then the datastore became practically unusable.

It might help to attach some SSD/NVMe as caches and/or "special devices", depending on the underlying technology. I have no expectation if this "workaround" will satisfy me on the long run...

Just my 2 €¢...

It most certainly is.

I wasn't aware of this. Classic case of RTFM...

But seriously, if I need SSDs that counteracts the whole premise of consumer grade hardware servers (as a consumer grade ssd would probably wear out quickly)...

And TBH I don't really see the need for SSDs in a backup server. Sure, speedier backups and restores are nice but not mission critical. And just to allow for the catalog to be fetched??? There must be other ways.

But I shall follow your lead and try to incorporate an SSD into my ZFS pool supporting the datastores.

Thanks!
