E1000E Not being initialized

I'm seeing a common thread here with E1000E network cards having issues.

I've been running hyper-v for 17 years but my current servers are not compatible with anything other than server 2012 so there's no upgrading. And as of about a year ago, I'm no longer able to use the hypervisor on my workstation to those servers to manage them and that has become a major issue. I'm working in a lab environment with only two "working" servers; AD providing authentication.

I started looking at hardware to upgrade into and stumbled on this project. It looks like I'll be ablet to convert my VMs to this environment. I took one of my servers offline this morning and installed Proxmox on it.

This server is an HP DL160 G6 which is older, but it has a ton of RAM and will do just fine in my lab. But the G6 is already a strike against it.

My environment is similar to a business where I have this:

operating networking switch -- [Server] --- SAN switch -|
|- [Server] ---| --- iSCSI SAN

I have two networking switches and two SAN switches, 4 connections per server; two to operating side and two to the SAN side.

The e1000e network interfaces in the hyper-v environment were configured to go to the operating side of things. The built-in network ports were wired into the SAN switches.

The e1000e cards are seen by Promox, but I cannot get them to come online. On the operating side of the network, I have a DHCP server. But these VM servers I hardcode the IP Address. I shuffled through all 4 ports and the only two that came alive were the built-in ones.

But after reading the server lockup issues, I'm wondering if I should skip this redundancy configuration and just use one of each internal nics to go to the operating side and the other to the SAN side.

I haven't registered the software yet because I'm not sure if it will work.

While I've seen some discussions around E1000e cards, I am not familiar with the issues personally. That said the solution could be as simple as replacing the card with a different brand, if possible.

You could experiment with different Kernels, as that is where the network drivers live.

I wish I could replace it, but they are special cards made to fit special slots on HP rack servers...
