Hi all,

I updated the kernel on all my cluster nodes when it came out a couple of days ago.

Linux 6.14.11-4-pve (2025-10-10T08:04Z)

pve-manager/9.0.11/3bf5476b8a4699e2

Now the fans wail on my G9 which it never did before requiring a reboot.

Once rebooted it happens again, same log messages

logs show:

Oct 16 13:48:20 gigantic kernel: hpsa 0000:03:00.0: Controller lockup detected: 0xffff0000 after 30
Oct 16 13:48:20 gigantic kernel: hpsa 0000:03:00.0: Telling controller to do a CHKPT
Oct 16 13:48:20 gigantic kernel: hpsa 0000:03:00.0: failed 0 commands in fail_all

The controller is on the latest and last FW, is in HBA mode and isn't being used. There are no drives in it except an nvme on pcie at the back.

Any idea how I fix this?

Rollback the kernel?

Any help greatly appreciated, It's in an open plan office and unusable like this.

This is now a daily occurrence in the afternoon. the machine is always idle when it happens. There must be some daily operation that is triggering it.

Of course it could just be a failing P440ar Controller and the updated kernel a sheer coincidence but in the absence of being able to find a solution, I'm going to remove the controller as it isn't being used.

Just leaving this here as a warning to others coming after me.

You can in theory use an ubuntu repo.

I think amsd only supports ilo5+, for ilo4 you have to use hp-ams but that's not available for newer ubuntu releases so it's most likely not compatible with pve9 / trixie ...

you can find more information here
