Difference between the command CP and vzdump ?

Hello,

Sorry for the question that you seem stupid.
I make the backup one time with CP and one time with vzdump
CP takes 40 minutes for making backup.
Vzdump takes 120 minutes for making backup.

Could you explain me why CP spend less time that vzdump for making backup ?

Because vzdump create a tar archive. Unfortunately, 'tar' format requires special handling for sparse files, which is hard to implement efficiently. But feel free to optimize that ;-)
