Create physical bridge rather than VM

Hi All,

A bit new to Proxmox so please forgive me if I've missed something simple here.

(Home lab setup)

I have installed Promox onto an old machine which has an onboard 1Gb nic and a newly installed 10Gb nic. The 1Gb nic connects directly to the home network switch and works fine.

I also have a second machine which has a 2.5Gb nic. I want this second machine to benefit from the fast network as I want to backup to the ZFS volume on the Proxmox machine. So the 2.5Gb directly connects to the 10Gb nic on the Proxmox machine and the Proxmox machine then bridges the two networks (act as a switch). So all traffic from the second machine goes through the Proxmox machine.

I had this working fine when the Proxmox machine was running Ubuntu, it was a simple 'bridge' between en0 and enp1s0. However the 'bridges' in proxmox seem more to do with a bridge between en0 and a VM rather than physical to physical nic.

I have TrueNas installed as a VM on the Proxmox machine but I have to backup with the second machine connected to the 1Gb home network switch...a bit slow.

Is there a way for me to achieve this?

Thanks for any pointers.

Hi,

Did you use standard Linux bridges when using Ubuntu? If so then they work exactly the same on Proxmox VE. A Linux bridge connects multiple network segments on the Ethernet layer, Proxmox VE does so for physical and or virtual ports, so it does not really matter if one or more physical eno1 (or similar named) NIC(s), or one or more virtual TAP devices from VMs are connected to the bridge.

Some configuration options may differ a bit in the default from us and Ubuntu though, but normally not that much that it would matter in most setups.

Can you post your network config and current state, i.e.:

Bash:
cat /etc/network/interfaces
ip addr

so that we can get a basic overview of what you configured?

Thanks Thomas,

I had to play around a bit to clear down the original interface configuration but it's setup and working beautifully. Did what you suggested and just selected Linux bridge and assigned both 'ports' to eno1 and enp1s0 and done. The link is up and running at 2.5Gb as hoped for.

Thanks,
