Cpu Scaling - save energy...

Hi Forum.

Is it possible to use some kind of cpu scaling software , i have a Intel Core 2 Duo ,
and i know from my WATT-meter that if i can lower it to 2Ghz i can save energy.

I'm coming from centos , where it works out of the box....

I am not sure, but maybe cpufreqd can do that.

# apt-get install cpufreqd

But you need to configure it manually (see 'man cpufreqd')

Please tell me if that works.

cpufreq should work fine with KVM, but on Proxmox it won't work reliably on some CPUs - i.e. those which don't have constant_tsc flag.
On such CPUs, cpufreq will only work reliably with kvm-84 and later.

There is also one catch here: if host's CPU frequency was low and a guest was started, /proc/cpuinfo on the guest will show lowered frequency value, even if in reality CPU may be working faster. It doesn't have any influence on performance though.
 
Hi Again.

I have done the following , but i have no success so far.

apt-get install cpufreqd

it also installed this package libcpufreq0

altered /etc/cpufreqd.conf - see below

according to this documentation http://linux.die.net/man/5/cpufreqd.conf

it seems to me that i should alter these lines under General , mayby i'm wrong.

when i try to start cpufreqd

/etc/init.d/cpufreqd start

it fails : Starting CPU Frequency daemon: cpufreqd failed!

cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/info - says

processor id: 0
acpi id: 1

throttling control: yes
limit interface: yes

On a ubuntu 9.04 , with a Core 2 Duo processor it works fine and as i can see

power management : yes ....

I have intel Speedsteep enabled in the BIOS , just double checked it....

I got it to work this way..

Hi Again.

I have done the following...

apt-get install powernowd

when it starts it complains about some missing sysfs

so i have added this modules to

/etc/modules

acpi_cpufreq

the i restarted powernowd

/etc/init.d/powernowd restart

i just checked and after a reboot it fine scales my cpu to 1998 Mhz....
