cPanel and additional IP's

Not sure where to go with this one...

cPanel requires the server to use an external IP for licensing.
When I , however, add a secondary IP to the vps - the cPanel license shows invalid.

It appears the ip's switch around :-(

so if we had say 126.112.36.197 and 126.112.36.198 and 126.112.36.199 on a server - the system does not use .197 as the main ip

Any ideas - as this is a killer issue.
any cPanel vps we have setup now has this issue :-(

PS ovenvz if it matters

I tested here with a standard debian on openvz. Both files /etc/hosts and /etc/network/interfaces looks good. What OS do you use?

And how does cpannel detect the primary IP? Maybe a question for the cpannel support.

hmmm

is there a way to choose the order?

in short - we are using centOS 5.1 image
CentOS / Redhat are the chosen flavors for cPanel.

:-( i know ... i know ...

anyhow - it works on all the other frameworks - but I am becoming a large fan of ProxMox ...

Ok, just tested with CentOS, but everything looks fine. Especially /etc/hosts does not change at all when you add/remove IPs.

So the question remains how does cpannel detect the primary IP?

Just my 2 cent, but wouldn't using veth instead of venet solve your problem?

unsure - if it will help I can get you access to a cPanel system on our end to play with.

email me off list (tried pm :-( no go ) glenn (at....) typo3usa dot com

Why dont you ask cpannel support. AFAIK you bought a license from them?

cpanel states go to you

cPanel states they think this is on your end.
Follow my thoughts on this one.

The OpenVZ systems we have work - as do the other vps systems
for some reason this one works different.

my thought would be to see if we can work together to make this work.
cPanel has a ton of users - something like 200+k worth of installs.
many vps in fact...

i think it would be in the interest of ProxMox to figure it out.
me - i am banging my head to figure out why it does not work out of the box the way I would think it would...

The question is quite simple. How does cpannel detect the primary IP? Do they offer support or not?

You want us to do the work you pay other people for?

Anyways, you can also get commercial support from us:

http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Get_support

hmmm

Dietmer - shocked a little at your response.
I asked the community for assistance - but also asked you guys via the paid support link in fact.
In the past here in the forums I have offered to pay for support -

that being said i think i may have found the issue. . .

In short -

if you just do a lynx www.ipchicken.com via the command line
it will tell you the ip address the server is using.

That being said - your system uses the lowest # ip in the system - even re-orders them

so if I were to set a few ips

1.1.1.5 , 1.1.1.2, 1.1.1.3, 1.1.1.4 and wanted 1.1.1.5 to be the primary the system will make 1.1.1.2 be the primary.

That being said - is there an easy fix - or is this something we should pay to have fixed -

if so - what would the bounty cost ?

Why, because I said you should contact the support of the commercial product you bought?

I asked the community for assistance

And you got some useful answers.

In the past here in the forums I have offered to pay for support -

and rejected our offer immediately.

No, that tells you what lynx is using, or what your firewall does with the ip address (masquerading).

Here is a better method to get the ip address.

# ping `hostname`

That being said - your system uses the lowest # ip in the system - even re-orders them

that is definetly not true. (see /etc/hosts, hostname).
And here lynx does not use the lowest ip. Tested with our CEntos5 template.

That being said - is there an easy fix - or is this something we should pay to have fixed -

I can't reproduce that behaviour here.

Hi,

You are talking here about a third party product and a licensing problem with that (commercial software). It must be clear that we cannot give support for non Proxmox software.

But we will try to find your issue - but this is only successful if you or the software vendor can answer our questions:

The clear question "How does cpanel detect the primary IP?", the answer was just "must be on your side..."

Based on such answers no professional work could be done. So I suggest you try to get an answer from cpanel. I know that bigger commercial companies works like this but that's not our fault.

If you cannot get an answer, we can try to get in contact with cpanel. But this job has nothing to do with this free support forum and therefore it cannot be free.

But to shorten this: find out how they check the licensing and then we will easily see what the problem is.

Best regards,

Proxmox Forum Admin

cpanel continued

they were logged into the cpanel vps as well as the host node.

I guess @ this point - I either need assistance from Proxmox or I need to try another product... (glad to pay as said --- btw still have not heard back from filling out the online form :-/ which was done prior to the peeing match earlier ;-> )

shame as we have well over 30 units in clusters @ this point
If we can take this off the forums - and into a pay to play - I am fine w/ that.

I more than understand the software is free but the support is not -
thats pretty much what the entire open source community we operate in is all about.

that being said -

PM me - call me - email me - send a smoke signal - or...
just reply to the online form I filled out roughly a week ago

:-)
