Console unresponsive in Firefox and Chrome

I have the issues of unresponsive Firefox and Chrome (for some reason).

Does it have to to be java version 6? as 7 is available and will this link work on Ubuntu 12.04?

I'm using java 7 on ubuntu 12.04 and vnc client works without any problems.

To install java 7 on ubuntu:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer

That worked after I removed a borked install of the same.
